How do you use a GTA 6 physical code?

The boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto VI holds a download code, and you redeem it in the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store the same way you would any voucher. Once redeemed, the game sits in your account library and downloads like a digital purchase.

Take-Two's pre-order press release of June 24, 2026 describes the physical version as "containing a download code inside the box," and we re-read that release on October 22, 2026. Why there is no disc is covered in our GTA 6 physical edition explainer, so this page stays on the code itself: where to type it, which account it lands on, and the one market where, according to reports of Rockstar Support, it has a shelf life.

VI Cheats is independent and is not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, Sony or Microsoft.

How to redeem a GTA 6 code on PS5

PlayStation's own support page "Redeem PS Store voucher code", read on October 22, 2026, gives three routes. Each one asks for the same thing. In PlayStation's words, "PlayStation Store voucher codes contain 12 digits."

On the console:

  • Open PlayStation Store and press the triangle button to bring up the menu.
  • Select More, then Redeem Code.
  • Enter the code carefully and select Redeem. Select Download to start downloading.

In a web browser:

  • Go to PlayStation Store and select your profile at the top of the screen.
  • Choose Redeem Code from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter the code and select Continue.

In the PlayStation App, select the PS Store icon, open the menu on the right side of the screen, choose Redeem Code, enter the code and select Continue.

The region rule matters more than the menu path. PlayStation states: "The voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account." For physical vouchers it tells you to look for a printed flag showing the country or region. A box bought abroad for a PS5 account registered somewhere else may not redeem.

How to redeem a GTA 6 code on Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft's Redeem page on xbox.com, read on October 22, 2026, lists the console steps:

  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Store.
  • Press the View button to open the side menu, then select Redeem.
  • Enter the 25-character code, select Next, and follow the prompts.

You can also redeem in a browser at redeem.microsoft.com. Microsoft Support describes it as selecting Redeem, signing in, then entering or pasting the code. The same xbox.com page says you cannot redeem a code in the Xbox mobile app at this time.

Microsoft adds one warning worth taking seriously: be signed in to the correct Microsoft account before redeeming, "because you won't be able to transfer it." Check the account before you type anything, especially on a shared family console.

Do GTA 6 codes expire in Japan?

Yes, according to Rockstar Support as quoted by the press. We could not load the Rockstar Support article "Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions" on October 22, 2026; it timed out every time. So the wording below is Kotaku's quotation of that page, from its July 27, 2026 report, not something we read on Rockstar's site ourselves.

Kotaku quotes Rockstar Support: "Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date," and gives the reason as "regional regulations." Dexerto and MP1st, both reporting on July 24, 2026, quoted the same page as naming the issuance date as the launch date, November 19, 2026.

Two things in the wider coverage are not Rockstar's:

  • The date. Kotaku counted 170 days forward from November 19, 2026 and arrived at May 8, 2027. That is Kotaku's calculation for a code issued on launch day. Rockstar did not publish a calendar date.
  • The reason. Kotaku, crediting a Power Unlimited columnist known as Genki, linked the limit to Japan's Payment Services Act and its deposit rules for prepaid goods, and called that the likely cause. Rockstar's quoted wording says only "regional regulations." The law explanation is Kotaku's, following that columnist.

If you buy a boxed copy in Japan, redeem the code soon after you get it.

Do Xbox GTA 6 codes expire or have a region lock?

We cannot confirm either point from Rockstar. Dexerto and MP1st both reported that the Japan expiry concerns the PS5 version. Both also said the Xbox version is not region locked, but neither quoted a Rockstar line for it, and Kotaku's report does not name a platform at all. No source we read says whether Xbox codes expire, so we are not printing an answer to that.

When can you pre-load a boxed copy of GTA 6?

From November 12, 2026, when Take-Two's June 24 release says boxed copies go on sale "to support pre-loading." The code has to be redeemed before anything downloads. Full dates are in GTA 6 pre-order and pre-load dates, and the install size will go on our GTA 6 file size page once the stores show it.

Can you cancel or return a GTA 6 physical code?

That depends on where you bought the box and whether you have redeemed the code. A redeemed code is attached to your account, and Microsoft says it cannot be moved to another one. Retailer rules differ, so read our guide on how to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order before you open anything. UK buyers comparing shop prices can see GTA 6 price in the UK.

Does the edition change GTA 6 cheats?

No. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI; our GTA 6 cheats tracker lists what is known.

Is there a disc in the GTA 6 box?

No. Take-Two's June 24, 2026 release says the physical version contains a download code inside the box.

PlayStation's support page says PlayStation Store voucher codes contain 12 digits, and the code must match your account's region.

When do GTA 6 physical codes expire in Japan?
