How Long Has GTA 6 Been in Development?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows the full answer, because Rockstar has never announced a development start date for GTA 6. The closest thing to an answer on record: Rockstar confirmed the game was in active development in February 2022, and Bloomberg's October 2026 making-of feature reports that development proper ran about eight years. Everything earlier than that is inference, not record.
The short version. Official confirmation came on February 4, 2022. The game arrives November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is four years and nine months between public confirmation and release, as a bare minimum. The real development period is longer. Rockstar has never said by how much.
When Did Rockstar First Confirm GTA 6?
February 4, 2022. Rockstar tucked the news into the end of a GTA Online update post on the Rockstar Newswire, then repeated it on Twitter. The line was short: "active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway." No title, no date, no footage. Outlets including Gematsu and TechRadar covered it the same day.
Read the wording again. "Well underway" means work had been going on for some time before February 2022. It does not say how long, and Rockstar has never filled in that blank. No official start year exists on record anywhere.
Did the 2022 Leak Reveal the Development Timeline?
On September 19, 2022, Rockstar publicly acknowledged a "network intrusion" in which an unauthorized third party accessed and leaked confidential material, including early development footage from the next Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar said it was "extremely disappointed" and expected no disruption to development. Take-Two said work would continue as planned.
We will not describe what the leaked footage showed. What the incident confirmed for the timeline question is narrow but real: early development footage of the game existed by September 2022, which fits the "well underway" wording from seven months before. The leak also spawned a wave of timeline guesses that still circulate today. More on those below.
What Did Trailer 1 Tell Us About the Schedule?
Trailer 1 arrived on December 4, 2023, a day ahead of plan, after the video leaked on X. Rockstar posted "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube" and published it within the hour. The trailer confirmed the title, Grand Theft Auto VI, and a 2025 release window.
That 2025 window did not hold. Rockstar announced two date changes, and the game now lands on November 19, 2026. The full sequence is documented in our GTA 6 delay history, so we will not retell it here. For this article the delays matter for one reason: each one stretched the publicly visible development period a little further.
What Does Bloomberg Say About GTA 6 Development Time?
The most detailed account so far comes from Bloomberg. In October 2026, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier published a making-of feature on the game. Per that reporting, development proper ran about eight years, a figure that excludes concept work and pre-production. Bloomberg also reports that early plans covered large portions of North and South America before the team narrowed its focus to Vice City and its surroundings.
Handle that eight-year figure with care. It is Bloomberg's reporting, not a Rockstar announcement, and it deliberately leaves out the fuzzy early phase where ideas get explored and discarded. We are not converting it into a start year here, and anyone who does is adding math the source does not support.
Bloomberg's feature also touches on money. Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe pushed back on the circulating cost figure without offering a number of her own. We keep the budget question separate; our GTA 6 budget report covers what is claimed and what is actually sourced.
Is the "In Development Since 2014" Claim True?
You will see "in development since 2014" and "work began right after GTA V shipped" stated as fact all over social media. Neither claim is verified. Both trace back to fan inference and material derived from the 2022 leak, not to anything Rockstar has said. No outlet has put an official start year on record, because there is not one to put.
That does not make the claims impossible. It makes them unsourced. Thinking about a game, pre-producing it, and building it at full scale are three different things, which is exactly why Bloomberg's eight-year figure fences off the early phase. Unverified means unverified.
How Big Was the Team Building GTA 6?
Rockstar has published no official headcount or credits list for the game. The best numbers available come, again, from Bloomberg. Per Schreier's October 2026 feature, Rockstar grew from 2,441 employees when Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018 to 4,711 employees across 12 offices by August 2026. That is studio-wide headcount across all Rockstar projects, not a GTA 6 team size, and nobody should quote it as one.
One detail from the Bloomberg feature shows the scale of the work better than any total. Rockstar set up a Los Angeles office dedicated almost entirely to the game's NPCs, hiring writers, producers, and directors for that single task. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said of the NPC workload projections: "The projections they were giving us were horrifying." For what previewers say those NPCs actually do in the hands-off demos, see our roundup of GTA 6 gameplay previews.
GTA 6 Development Timeline FAQ
How many years has GTA 6 been in development?
No official number exists. Rockstar confirmed active development in February 2022 and has never announced a start date. Bloomberg's October 2026 feature reports that development proper ran about eight years, excluding pre-production. That is reporting, not a Rockstar statement.
When was GTA 6 officially announced?
Rockstar confirmed the game on February 4, 2022, in a Newswire post. The title and first trailer followed on December 4, 2023, one day early after the trailer leaked. The game ships November 19, 2026; our GTA 6 release date page tracks the countdown and timings.
Has GTA 6 been in development since 2014?
That claim is unverified. It comes from fan inference and leak-derived guesswork, not from Rockstar. No official start year has ever been published, so treat any specific year as a guess.
Does GTA 6 have cheat codes yet?
No. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats for GTA 6, and VI Cheats has verified no working GTA 6 code of any kind. Our GTA 6 cheats tracker logs the official silence and what past Rockstar games did, labeled per game.
Why did GTA 6 take so long to make?
Rockstar has not given one single reason. The scale Bloomberg reports, thousands of staff across 12 offices and a dedicated NPC studio, points to ambition as the main driver. The two announced delays are laid out in our history of every announced date change.
