GTA 6 Which Console: PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S
GTA VI runs on every current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console: the PS5 with a disc drive, the PS5 Digital Edition, the PS5 Pro, the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, all on November 19, 2026. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have published no resolution, frame rate or benchmark for any of them, so there is no verified best console, only a list of what each store page says.
This page is a facts table, not a recommendation. Any of the five machines runs it; the differences on record concern codes, add-ons and subscriptions, not graphics.
We read the PlayStation US product page, Sony's PS5 lineup page, the Xbox US store listing and the Rockstar Support page on platforms and editions on October 22, 2026. Every line below comes from one of those pages unless it says otherwise. The game has no published cheat codes yet; see the GTA 6 cheats page.
Which PlayStation 5 models can play GTA 6?
All of them. The PlayStation US page says the game "is released for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026" and adds that "It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles." Sony's PS5 lineup page lists three machines:
- PS5 Console, 1TB, with a disc drive.
- PS5 Digital Edition, 825GB, described as "An all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive", with an additional disc drive sold separately.
- PS5 Pro, which Sony's own product page lists with 2TB of SSD storage built in.
The game's page carries a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label. That label has no numbers behind it. Sony's PS5 Pro page describes enhanced games as "enhanced with the power of PS5 Pro for improved visuals and performance" and notes that "PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game." Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said which PS5 Pro enhancements GTA VI uses, or at what resolution or frame rate it runs on any PS5. The frame rate question has its own article: is GTA 6 30fps or 60fps.
Can I play GTA 6 on PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes, and you lose nothing. GTA VI is a download on every console. Rockstar Support says the boxed version contains "a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game" and that "A disc will not be included in the box." A PS5 without a disc drive redeems that code the same way a PS5 with a drive does.
The same Rockstar page says a physical Ultimate Edition "is not available". So the box gives a Digital Edition owner exactly what it gives everyone else: one code plus the Vintage Vice City Pack. Storage is the one thing to plan for, because Rockstar has published no file size; see how big GTA 6 is on disk.
Does GTA 6 run on the PS5 Slim?
Yes. "Slim" is not a Sony product name. Sony's lineup page uses the word only in footnotes and in an FAQ about "the slim PS5 console"; the machines themselves are sold as "PS5 Console" and "PS5 Digital Edition". Those are the first two machines listed above, and both are PlayStation 5 consoles.
Which Xbox can play GTA 6?
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The Xbox US listing shows a release date of 11/19/2026 and two capability badges, "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" and "Single player". It shows nothing else about hardware: no 4K, HDR, 60fps, Smart Delivery or cloud badge, no install size, and no mention of Xbox One.
Microsoft's console pages list the Series X in 1TB disc-drive, 1TB all-digital and 2TB disc-drive versions, and the Series S in 512GB and 1TB versions, described as "all-digital gaming consoles for disc-free gaming". The disc question does not matter here either, because the GTA VI box ships a code. Anything specific to the smaller console lives in GTA 6 on Xbox Series S.
GTA 6 on PS5 vs Xbox Series X: what is different on record?
Every difference the store pages and Rockstar Support document is listed below. None of it concerns graphics or performance.
- Region locking of codes. Rockstar Support says PlayStation codes "are to only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to a specific set of countries", grouped into regions such as North America (Canada and the United States) and United Kingdom. The same page says: "Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked." Japan carries an extra rule: PlayStation codes bought there "will expire 170 days after the issuance date", which Rockstar gives as the launch date, November 19, 2026.
- Ultimate Edition Upgrade. Xbox US sells it for $20.00 with a pre-order button. PlayStation US still lists it as "Unavailable". Rockstar Support says Standard Edition owners on either platform can buy it once their code is redeemed, so this is a storefront timing gap, not a content gap.
- GTA+ month. Both stores bundle one month of GTA+ with digital pre-orders. PlayStation requires the pre-order "before November 20, 2026" and the claim "by March 31, 2027". Xbox requires the purchase "prior to 19 November 2026 23:59:59" and redemption "within 180 days after placing your pre-order".
- Marketing labels. PlayStation carries "PS5 Pro Enhanced" and the "plays best on PS5" line from a joint Sony and Rockstar blog post of June 24, 2026. Xbox carries "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S". None came with a measurement. The Sony line is unpacked in what the "plays best on PS5" post claims.
Everything else matches: $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate, one player, Mature 17+ from the ESRB with the same seven descriptors, pre-load from November 12 and release on November 19, 2026.
Is there a best console for GTA 6?
Not one that anyone can prove. Rockstar has published no resolution, no frame rate and no graphics mode for the PS5, the PS5 Pro, the Series X or the Series S. Sony's "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge is a category label whose features, in Sony's own words, "will vary by game". Microsoft's "Optimized" badge is the same kind of label on the other side.
Frame rate figures do circulate, and Rockstar has published none. The 30fps number that appears in search results is a second-hand relay of one developer remark at a creator preview, not a specification, and the rest come from leaks, retailer listings or guesses.
One note sits outside the console question: an unconfirmed PC report, weighed in the GTA 6 PC release date report. As of today, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the only platforms Rockstar sells the game for.
Do I need a disc drive for GTA 6 on PS5?
No. Rockstar Support says the boxed copy holds a download code and no disc, so a PS5 Digital Edition redeems it the same way a PS5 with a drive does. Plan for storage instead: Sony lists the Digital Edition with 825GB, and Rockstar has published no file size.
Is the PS5 Slim a PS5 for GTA 6?
Yes. Sony sells the consoles its footnotes call slim as "PS5 Console" and "PS5 Digital Edition", and the game's PlayStation page lists PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro.
GTA 6 which console should I buy it on?
No source can settle that. The PlayStation page shows a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label and the Xbox listing shows "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S"; neither comes with a resolution or frame rate, and Rockstar has published none.
Can you play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. The PlayStation US page says it "will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles", and Rockstar Support lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the only platforms.
