What is the GTA 6 file size right now?

There is no official GTA 6 file size yet. On September 29, 2026 we checked the PlayStation Store page and the Xbox Store page for Grand Theft Auto VI, and neither printed an install size, a download size or a storage requirement.

Rockstar Games has not published one either. The game is due on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per the Rockstar Newswire post of November 6, 2025. For anyone who has pre-ordered, the size is still an open practical question.

What we can give you today is narrower but real: the store status as of our check date, what earlier Rockstar games took up on disk, and the storage steps Sony and Microsoft document for their consoles. We will update this page when a store or Rockstar lists a number.

Do the PS5 and Xbox store pages list a size?

No. Here is what each page showed when we looked on September 29, 2026.

The PlayStation US product page gives the release date for PS5 and PS5 Pro, shows the ESRB rating as pending, and lists a "7-Day Pre-load" as part of both the Standard and Ultimate editions. It has no size field.

The Xbox Store listing for the Standard Edition showed the rating as pending, likely Mature 17+, and no approximate size. Xbox store pages often render details with scripts, so a field could appear later that our fetch did not see. We will re-check.

When will the real GTA 6 file size be known?

Most likely when pre-loading opens. Pre-load for GTA VI is set to open on November 12, 2026, one week before launch, which matches the 7-day pre-load wording on the PlayStation listing. We expect the size to appear around then, though no store has said when it will list one.

That was the pattern with GTA V's PS5 release. PlayStation Universe reported the PS5 download size on March 7, 2022, a day before that version's pre-load opened on March 8. Our pre-order and pre-load dates page is kept current: GTA 6 pre-order and pre-load dates.

How big were GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2?

These are older games on different hardware, so the numbers below show rough scale and are not a forecast for GTA VI.

  • GTA V on PS5: 86.837 GB for the launch download, reported by PlayStation Universe on March 7, 2022. Later updates can change an installed size.
  • GTA V on earlier consoles: around 57 GB, according to a Game Rant report of March 8, 2022, which said updates could push it to as much as 90 GB.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4: 99 GB of installation space, plus an extra 50 GB during the install for the digital version. On Xbox One it needed 107 GB. Game Informer reported these figures on October 18, 2018, from Rockstar's own support page.

That extra 50 GB matters. RDR2's digital PS4 install needed about 150 GB free at the moment of installing, even though the game settled at 99 GB. We have no information on whether GTA VI will work the same way on PS5.

What about the 150 GB to 250 GB figures online?

You will find sites quoting a range of roughly 150 to 250 GB, and a few quoting much larger numbers. None of those figures come from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. They are estimates or unverified claims, and we are not repeating any of them as a planning number.

A leaked or guessed size can be wrong by a wide margin in either direction, so we will wait for a store listing before printing a number.

How to check free storage on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

On PS5, Sony's support page says to open Settings, then Storage, to see how much space is free. To remove something, go to Settings, Storage, Console Storage, Games and Apps, pick what you want to remove, and select Delete. Deleted purchases can be downloaded again from your game library.

Sony also documents two ways to add space:

  • An M.2 SSD installed inside the console. It must be a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive between 250 GB and 8 TB, with a heatsink or similar cooling structure. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
  • USB extended storage, between 250 GB and 8 TB, at SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster. Sony's page is clear that PS5 games cannot be played from USB storage. You can park other PS5 games there to free internal space, then copy them back to play.

On Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft sells Seagate Storage Expansion Cards; the xbox.com accessory page listed 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions when we checked. An Xbox Wire post from September 24, 2020 says games play directly from the card with the same performance as the internal SSD. The same post says USB 3.1 external drives can play Xbox One and backward compatible games, but its comparison table shows they cannot play games optimized for Xbox Series X|S. A USB drive is still useful as a parking spot for other games.

Should I clear space before pre-load opens?

Clearing space early costs nothing, and you can re-download what you delete. The safe approach is to wait for the listed size on November 12, then free that amount plus some headroom for launch patches. Rockstar has not said whether a day-one update is planned or how large one would be.

If you bought a physical copy, check what the box actually contains before assuming a disc install. We have not confirmed Rockstar's statement on the physical edition's format, so we are not describing it here.

One more practical point. A missing size is not a sign of a hidden early build. Anything offering a GTA VI download before the official pre-load is not from Rockstar; see GTA 6 beta download. And for what is actually confirmed on codes, see our GTA 6 cheats status page, which lists no verified GTA VI code as of today.

VI Cheats is an independent site. It is not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, Sony or Microsoft.

How many GB is GTA 6?

Unknown as of September 29, 2026. Rockstar, the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store had not listed a size when we checked.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external USB drive?

Rockstar has not said. For comparison, Sony says PS5 games cannot be played from USB extended storage, and Microsoft's Xbox Wire storage primer shows USB drives cannot play games optimized for Xbox Series X|S.

Is there a PC version to check the size on?

No. Rockstar has announced GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only and has never announced a PC version.

Will this page be updated when the size is listed?

Yes. We will add the figure, the platform and the date we saw it once a store listing or Rockstar publishes it.
