Is GTA 6 region locked?
Yes on PlayStation 5, no on Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Support says a GTA 6 download code for PS5 only redeems on a PlayStation account registered to the region group the code was sold in, while Xbox codes carry no region lock. The source is Rockstar's own support article, "Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions", which carries the stamp "Last Updated: August 18, 2026" and which VI Cheats read in full on October 22, 2026.
The page's region section is two sentences long. First: "Region restrictions for code redemptions of Grand Theft Auto VI are based on the region associated with your platform account." Second: "If you purchase either version of Grand Theft Auto VI in a region different from your platform account, that version must match the region of your platform account." A separate section on download codes adds a recommendation: "It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems."
Below: the PlayStation region groups as Rockstar lists them, the Japan rule, the single Xbox sentence, and what the page says about the Ultimate Edition Upgrade and pre-load. For what Rockstar has and has not published about the game itself, see the GTA 6 cheats hub.
Which PS5 GTA 6 codes work in which countries?
Rockstar groups PlayStation codes by where they were sold. In the page's words, codes from each group are "to only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to a specific set of countries". Read on October 22, 2026, the groups are:
- Brazil: Brazil
- LATAM: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay
- North America: Canada, United States
- Korea: South Korea
- Japan: Japan
- United Kingdom: United Kingdom
- Saudi Arabia & UAE: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
- Rest of Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand
- Rest of EMEA and Asia: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine
The United Kingdom is a group of one: a code sold in the UK is for UK-registered accounts only, while most of the rest of Europe shares the long "Rest of EMEA and Asia" list with Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, South Africa and Turkey. Canada and the United States, by contrast, form a single group.
The page lists no other countries. If yours is missing, Rockstar has not said how a code bought there behaves, and VI Cheats will not guess.
Why do Japanese GTA 6 codes expire?
Japan is the only group with a time limit attached. The page states: "Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations." Rockstar does not name the regulation. By our count, 170 days after November 19, 2026 is May 8, 2027.
The sentence is about the code, not the game. The page says nothing about what happens to a copy once the code has been redeemed. Step-by-step redemption of the boxed code on PS5 and Xbox is covered in the GTA 6 physical code redeem guide.
Whose rule is the PS5 region lock?
Rockstar's page does not say. It ties the restriction to "the region associated with your platform account" and prints the nine PlayStation groups, but it names no author for the groupings and cites no policy behind them. The closest first-party line VI Cheats found sits on PlayStation Support's own page about redeeming store voucher codes, read on October 22, 2026: "The voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account." That is Sony's general rule for PlayStation Store vouchers. Whether the nine GTA 6 groups are Sony's standard voucher regions, a list Rockstar drew up, or something agreed between the two companies, neither page says.
VI Cheats gives no advice on changing an account region or opening an account in another country. Rockstar's only guidance is the line already quoted: buy from a retailer in the country of your platform account.
Is the Xbox version of GTA 6 region locked?
No. Rockstar's page deals with Xbox in one sentence: "Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked." There is no list of Xbox region groups because there is nothing to list.
The recommendation to buy from a retailer in your own country sits above both platform entries, framed as a way "to avoid potential activation problems". The page does not say whether any such problem exists on Xbox.
Why does the region lock matter more for GTA 6 than for a disc game?
Because there is no disc. Rockstar's page says the physical version "will contain a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game" and repeats, twice, "A disc will not be included in the box." An imported PS5 box is therefore an imported code, and that code is subject to the region groups above. A box bought abroad for a PS5 account registered at home can turn into a code the account cannot redeem. The GTA 6 physical edition explainer covers what else is in the box and when it ships, and the how to gift GTA 6 guide covers buying for someone else, where the recipient's account region now decides whether a PS5 code will work at all.
The timing adds pressure. The page says the physical version "is expected to become available for shipping and pickup from retailers starting on November 12", a week before launch, so the first region problems would surface during pre-load rather than on launch night. Our pre-order and pre-load dates page lists the dates themselves.
The rule has been on Rockstar's page since at least August 18, 2026, the date on its update stamp; Insider Gaming reported it on July 27, 2026. Nothing had changed when VI Cheats re-read the page on October 22, 2026.
Does the region lock apply to the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Upgrade?
The page says Standard Edition owners "can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores after the Standard Edition code has been redeemed". The upgrade is a store purchase made after redemption, not a second code. The page says nothing further about regions for it.
Can I use a US GTA 6 PS5 code in Canada?
Yes, by Rockstar's list. Canada and the United States sit together in the "North America" group, so a PS5 code sold in either country is meant for accounts registered in either. The page's general recommendation still stands: buy from a retailer in the country of your own account to avoid activation problems.
Does the GTA 6 region lock affect pre-load?
The page says "pre-load will begin at local midnight on November 12, 2026" and that "Codes that are redeemed before launch will begin pre-loading on November 12." The region rule governs redemption. Once a PS5 code has redeemed, the page describes no separate region check at the pre-load stage.
Is GTA 6 region locked on PS5 if I buy it from the PlayStation Store instead of a box?
The page's first region sentence covers "code redemptions", however the code was bought. Its second sentence is wider: "either version" of the game bought "in a region different from your platform account" must match the account's region, which takes in the digital version too. A purchase made directly on the PlayStation Store with the account that will play the game is made in that account's own region, so the mismatch the page warns about does not arise. The page describes no further check for that case.
