How to gift GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox today

On Xbox, Microsoft documents a "Buy as gift" option for digital games, but its own pages do not say whether a pre-order can be sent that way. On PS5, PlayStation points gift givers to PlayStation Store gift cards, and the boxed edition (a download code in a box, no disc) goes on sale November 12, 2026.

That is the short version of how to gift GTA 6, checked on October 8, 2026. GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has never announced a PC version. Both stores list the Standard Edition at 79.99 USD and the Ultimate Edition at 99.99 USD. The sections below cover what each platform documents, what it does not, and the traps to avoid.

Can you gift a game on the PlayStation Store?

PlayStation's own gift card page answers this directly. It calls PlayStation Store gift cards "the go-to way of gifting digital games" on PS5, PS5 Pro and PS4. It does not describe any button that buys a game straight onto someone else's account, and the official GTA VI product page we read today says nothing about gifting either.

So the practical PlayStation route is wallet funds. You buy a card, the person you are giving it to redeems the code, and they buy the game (or pre-order it) themselves.

There is an older change worth knowing about. Game Informer reported on March 26, 2019 that Sony confirmed it would stop offering full games through its Global Digital at Retail program from April 1, 2019. That is why shops no longer sell a full PlayStation game as a download code on a card. Sony said at the time that DLC, add-ons, virtual currency and season passes would still be sold at retail. That change was about retail codes, not about the store itself.

How do PlayStation gift cards work for GTA VI?

The details come from two PlayStation pages read on October 8, 2026:

  • The cards are pre-paid and spend on digital games, add-ons and subscriptions only. They cannot buy physical products or PlayStation Gear merchandise.
  • The person you give the card to redeems it on a PS5 or PS4, in the PlayStation App, or in a web browser, by choosing Redeem Code and entering the 12-digit code.
  • PlayStation's support page says the voucher code needs to match the region of the account. Physical cards carry a printed flag showing the country or region.

If your friend's account is set to a different country than the card you bought, the code will not work for them. Check their account region before you buy.

The PlayStation page does not list card amounts, and we will not guess at them. Pick a value that covers the edition they want. The two editions and what separates them are laid out in our Standard vs Ultimate Edition breakdown.

How to gift GTA VI on Xbox

Microsoft's Xbox Wire guide, published December 5, 2025, walks through gifting a digital game:

  • On an Xbox console, open the Microsoft Store, find the game, and select the gift wrap icon. You can pick someone from your friends list or type an email address.
  • On the Xbox or Microsoft Store website, the option sits in the "..." menu beside the buy button, and only the email route is offered.

The recipient gets a message on their console and at the email tied to their Xbox account, then uses Redeem code. Microsoft states one firm rule: the person receiving the gift must be in the same country as the sender. Games, add-ons and subscriptions can all be sent this way.

Can you gift a GTA 6 pre-order on Xbox?

We could not confirm it either way from a current Microsoft page.

The December 2025 Xbox Wire guide says nothing about pre-orders. The older Xbox Wire post that announced console gifting, published November 16, 2017, listed pre-orders among the items gifting did not include, next to free products and consumable DLC. That post is almost nine years old. Microsoft may have changed the rule since, and we found no first-party page today that says so in either direction.

The GTA VI Xbox listing we read today shows the game as a pre-order. Our page reader did not show a gift option on it, but store buttons can load in ways a reader misses, so treat that as unconfirmed rather than a no. If the gift icon does not appear on the GTA VI listing, the fallback is an Xbox gift card. Microsoft's redeem page says the recipient enters the twenty-five-character code from the Store on their console or in the Microsoft Store on Windows. It also warns that a redeemed code cannot be transferred, so they need to be signed in to the right Microsoft account. They can then buy or pre-order the game themselves.

One more practical point. If the person you are giving the game to already pre-ordered it, a second copy helps nobody. Ask first, or check our guide on how to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order if a duplicate happens.

Is the physical edition the easier gift?

For a wrapped present, it may be. Rockstar said on June 24, 2026 that physical copies hold a download code rather than a disc, and boxed copies go on sale November 12, 2026, a week before launch. Our physical edition report covers what is in the box.

A boxed copy avoids the store gifting questions above. The download code inside still has to be redeemed on the correct console family, so buy the PS5 version for a PlayStation owner and the Xbox Series X|S version for an Xbox owner.

How to gift GTA 6 well: what to check first

The ESRB rated GTA VI M for Mature 17+, with In-Game Purchases. PEGI has not published a final rating. If the gift is for a younger player, our age rating report has the detail.

The game is single-player on both stores. The PlayStation product page states "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience," and the Xbox listing shows Single player.

If the person you are buying for is mostly after cheat codes, be honest with them. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. Our GTA 6 cheats status page tracks what is confirmed.

Can you send GTA 6 as a gift on PS5?

PlayStation documents no direct gift purchase. Its gift card page names PlayStation Store gift cards as the way to give digital games. The code has to match the region of the recipient's account.

Can you gift a game on Xbox to someone in another country?

No. Microsoft's December 2025 Xbox Wire guide says the recipient must be in the same country as the sender.

Can you gift a GTA 6 pre-order on Xbox?

It is not documented on a current Microsoft page we could find. A 2017 Xbox Wire post excluded pre-orders from gifting. An Xbox gift card avoids the question.

When can you buy a boxed copy of GTA 6 to give?

Boxed copies go on sale November 12, 2026. Rockstar says they contain a download code, not a disc.
