Which GTA 6 animals have been named?
Eight GTA 6 animals are named in Game Informer's free wildlife exclusive of September 29, 2026: flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators as Florida natives, plus green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaque monkeys as invasive species. Rockstar has not published a species list of its own. Every name below carries the outlet that printed it and the date.
Game Informer's 14-page cover story (issue 382) is paywalled. The free wildlife exclusive posted beside it, by Marcus Stewart, is the primary source here. The other free pages are summarised in Game Informer GTA 6 cover story: what the free pages say.
The species list, with who printed each name:
- Flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators: Game Informer's free exclusive, September 29, which calls them native Florida animals. Repeated by Insider Gaming the same day, IBTimes UK (September 30) and Notebookcheck (October 5).
- Green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, rhesus macaque monkeys: Game Informer's free exclusive, September 29, grouped as invasive creatures. IBTimes UK and Notebookcheck print the same four.
- Whales, turtles, jellyfish: Dexerto, September 29, in its own write-up of the feature. Game Informer's free page does not name them, so these three rest on Dexerto alone.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
More than 170 species. Game Informer's free exclusive says Leonida "will teem with over 170 animal species across land, air, and sea." Kotaku, Dexerto and Insider Gaming reported the same figure on September 29, each crediting Game Informer. IBTimes UK, blue News and Notebookcheck repeated it.
One line reads differently. Kotaku's October 2 round-up, by Zack Zwiezen, says "over 150+ animal species across GTA 6's map." That line links to Kotaku's own September 29 report, by the same writer, headlined over 170 species. We read the 150 as a slip, not a second count.
The breakdown comes from secondary outlets, because Game Informer's free page gives only the total. Dexerto, Insider Gaming and blue News report more than 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals; Notebookcheck puts the birds at about 60. No outlet gives a fish or reptile count.
Leonida itself is covered in how big is the GTA 6 map, and its named regions in GTA 6 locations.
What invasive species are in GTA 6?
Four, per Game Informer's free exclusive: green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.
All four are Florida problems. Notebookcheck's October 5 story cites a University of Florida information sheet on the state's wild macaque population, and blue News (September 30) notes that the rhesus monkeys along the Silver River descend from animals released in the 1930s as a tourist attraction. Both are Florida facts, and neither outlet places the Silver River in Leonida.
Michael Kane, Rockstar's vice president of dynamic art, is quoted by Dexerto and Insider Gaming on September 29: "Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include across the different biomes in Leonida." Game Informer's free page carries no named quote.
What are Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals in GTA 6?
Game Informer's free exclusive says players "can also track certain animals categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary," and adds that the identities of these harder-to-find creatures are being kept secret. Dexerto printed the three labels on September 29, and IBTimes UK on September 30 with the line that Rockstar "has not revealed the identities of the hardest-to-find creatures." Notebookcheck repeated the three labels on October 5 and noted that Rockstar has not said which species belong to them.
No outlet we read has placed a single species in any of the three categories. A page that names a Legendary animal for GTA 6 today is not working from Game Informer.
The precedent is Red Dead Redemption 2, and it is a precedent only. The AV Club's October 2018 guide describes Legendary animals in that game as white-coated versions of regular species that provided a challenge and gave unique items for sale and crafting. Each could be killed once. Entering its region triggered an alert from the Log, a clue such as fur or droppings started a trail of markers, and the Compendium entry told players where to look before the hunt. Binoculars let players study animals from a distance and gauge their value. Nothing in the GTA 6 reporting mentions hunting, pelts or a Compendium; the one reported crossover is the study mechanic covered next.
Can you pet dogs or visit a zoo in GTA 6?
Dogs: yes, in Rockstar's own footage. Consequence's August 28 breakdown of the Netflix Extended Look notes that Jason "has the option of petting, scolding, or studying a dog," and that petting brought up an angel icon. We cover that footage in GTA 6 Extended Look.
Studying animals: Inven Global's October 7 report on IGN's full Rob Nelson interview says that "players can study animals in a collection mechanic carried over from RDR2." Nelson is Head of Development at Rockstar North and spoke to IGN during live play. Insider Gaming's October 7 report on the same transcript does not mention animals, so this rests on one readable outlet; IGN's page is blocked to us.
Zoo: Dexerto's September 29 article says players "will be able to study different animals and even visit the zoo," citing the Game Informer issue. Game Informer's free wildlife page does not mention a zoo, and claims that Nelson added zoo details in the IGN transcript could not be confirmed in any outlet we could read. The zoo rests on Dexerto's account of the paywalled feature.
Is there an official GTA 6 animals list?
No. Rockstar has not published one. The eight names in this guide come from Game Informer's reporting; the bird and mammal counts, the Kane quote and the extra species come from outlets covering that reporting.
That matters for the "all confirmed animals" pages in search. They are compilations. The better ones blend the eight Game Informer names with animals spotted in trailers and screenshots. Gurugamer's October 1 list adds deer, boars, bobcats, dolphins, sharks and several dog breeds, and says plainly that most come from footage rather than an official list. We left trailer sightings out because a glimpse in footage does not identify a species the way a printed name does.
Are there animal cheats in GTA 6?
None are known. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats of any kind for GTA 6, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA 6 code. Any animal spawn code or Legendary unlock offered for GTA 6 is invented. Our GTA 6 cheats page tracks what is verified, which today is nothing; any codes Rockstar publishes after November 19, 2026 will be tested there.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
More than 170 species, according to Game Informer's free wildlife exclusive of September 29, 2026. Kotaku, Dexerto and Insider Gaming reported the same figure that day. Rockstar has given no figure of its own.
What GTA 6 animals have been named so far?
Flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaque monkeys, all named on Game Informer's free exclusive page. Dexerto also lists whales, turtles and jellyfish. Everything else online comes from trailer sightings.
Are there legendary animals in GTA 6?
Game Informer reports Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories and says the identities of those animals are being kept secret. No species in those categories has been named. Red Dead Redemption 2 used a legendary animal system, but that is precedent, not a GTA 6 confirmation.
Can you have a pet in GTA 6?
Unknown. Footage shows Jason petting, scolding or studying a stray dog, per Consequence's Extended Look breakdown. No outlet we checked reports ownable pets, and Rockstar has not said so.
