How big is the GTA 6 map? There is no measured answer. Rockstar has never published a size figure for the state of Leonida, has never released a world map, and its official game page carries no dimensions at all. Every square-mileage number in circulation is an estimate somebody built out of trailer frames, screenshots or leaked material.

That is the position as of September 18, 2026. Below is what is genuinely official, what a Rockstar developer said out loud in August, and why the tidy figures on competing pages come apart when you trace them.

What has Rockstar actually put in writing about Leonida?

Rockstar has put very little in writing, and none of what it has published is a measurement. The official game page at rockstargames.com/VI, read on September 18, 2026, places Jason and Lucia in Vice City inside a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. That same page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S and reads "Coming November 19, 2026". No size. No area. No map image.

The named places came earlier. On May 6, 2025, alongside Trailer 2, Rockstar updated its own site with location pages for Vice City, Ambrosia, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and Mount Kalaga National Park, which TweakTown catalogued the same day. Leonida is the state. Vice City is its major city. Those names are official. Their borders, the distances between them, and their combined area are not.

Where does "twice the size of GTA 5" come from?

From one person talking, in August 2026. Around the Extended Look on August 27, 2026, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson gave comparative figures to press and creators at preview sessions. Kotaku, reporting on August 27, 2026, relayed the YouTuber TGG's account of that conversation: the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's, and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. TechSpot's write-up the same day carries the same set of figures from the same preview, including that Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos.

That is real information and worth having. It is also a spoken, rounded comparison, relayed through intermediaries, and it is not a published specification. Rockstar has printed none of it on its own site.

Kotaku's report, which is the origin of all three figures, carries a fourth that sits awkwardly beside them: that Vice City with its surrounding suburbs is eleven times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings. Hold those side by side. If the whole of Leonida is about double GTA V's map, it is hard to see how one metro area inside Leonida is also eleven times Los Santos plus everything around it, unless "surroundings" is being drawn very differently in each half of the comparison. Something is being rounded, compressed or lost in relay. That is the ordinary fate of a number repeated secondhand, and it is why we will not print any of them as fact.

Why 118 to 132 square miles is not a real number

Because it is a guess multiplied by a guess.

The arithmetic runs like this. GTA V is 49 square miles. GTA VI is about twice that. So Leonida lands somewhere around 118 to 132 square miles. Both halves of that sum are soft, and the sum does not even close on its own terms: twice 49 is 98, and the range being quoted starts twenty square miles above it.

Rockstar never published a size for GTA V either. The 49 square mile figure entered circulation in 2013 through games and newspaper coverage, not through Rockstar. GamingBolt's piece on it, published September 8, 2013, hedges the number as what the world "seems" to be and passes it along from a newspaper report rather than from anything Rockstar published. A rounded "roughly twice" then gets handled like a precise multiplier, and the output is printed to three digits.

Other figures come from people measuring leaked development material with water excluded and posting the result. Some of that work may well be careful. We could not trace any of it to a named author, a dated post or a described method, so we are not printing the number, and what is being measured is a build nobody can confirm matches the shipping game.

We handle this the way we handle cheat claims. Our GTA V cheat reference is badged unverified for GTA VI for exactly this reason, and the labelling rules are written out in how VI Cheats labels and verifies what it publishes. A developer's offhand comparison and a fan's careful measurement are both worth reading. Neither becomes official by being repeated.

Is there an official GTA 6 map to look at?

No. Every complete Leonida map available today is fan-assembled from trailer frames and screenshots, or traced from leaked development files. Some of it is skilled work. None of it is authoritative, and Rockstar has confirmed no version of it.

Is there a second city or a second state in GTA 6?

Leonida is the entire announced setting. No second state has been announced, no Liberty City, no San Andreas, no returning region from an older game. The places Rockstar has put its name to all sit inside one state. A page telling you the map connects to another GTA city is inventing it.

Should you download a leaked map or a full map build?

Map curiosity is the exact lure several malware campaigns are built on. Help Net Security reported on September 10, 2026 that ISO files sold as early or leaked GTA VI builds carried NJRAT and DCRAT remote access trojans, the Mercurial Grabber infostealer, and a Chaos ransomware variant used as a wiper, which overwrote large files with random data. Some of those files were padded past 100 GB so the download would look like a real install. No map preview is worth that. The invented cheat lists work the same way, and we go through them in why the GTA 6 cheat codes you see listed are fake.

When will there be a real answer?

At launch. Rockstar's own page lists November 19, 2026, checked September 18, 2026, and that date has not moved at any point during 2026; the current status is laid out in what Rockstar currently lists for the GTA 6 release date. Once people are actually driving across Leonida, somebody will measure it properly, and that measurement will be worth reading. Until then, the accurate answer is that nobody outside Rockstar knows.

Common questions about the GTA 6 map size

How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told previewers in August 2026 that it is roughly twice the size, as relayed by Kotaku on August 27, 2026. That is a spoken comparison, not a published measurement. Rockstar has never printed a size figure for either game.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2?

The same August 2026 preview comment put it at around three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's world. Again, relayed secondhand, and never confirmed on Rockstar's own site. Read it as a developer's rough comparison rather than a spec.

Has Rockstar released an official GTA 6 map?

No. As of September 18, 2026 there is no official world map, no region legend and no published area figure. The full maps circulating online are fan reconstructions or derived from leaks, and Rockstar has endorsed none of them.

How many square miles is Leonida?

Unknown. The 118 to 132 square mile range is fan arithmetic built on an unconfirmed GTA V figure multiplied by a rounded verbal comparison. Neither input traces back to Rockstar, so the output does not either.
