Does GTA 6 have hurricanes?
Yes, according to Game Informer. In a free article published on September 29, 2026, the magazine reported that Leonida, the Florida-inspired state where Grand Theft Auto VI is set, gets tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, the same as the real Florida.
That is the full answer to "Does GTA 6 have hurricanes?" for now. Game Informer was open about the gaps. It said it does not know how often these larger, more violent storms happen, or how they affect gameplay and the story. We found no Rockstar statement on hurricanes since then, as of October 22, 2026. Treat hurricanes as a reported feature with unknown frequency and unknown consequences, nothing more.
The article was a free exclusive tied to the magazine's cover story. We cover the rest of that issue in our Game Informer GTA 6 cover story breakdown. This page sticks to the weather.
What Game Informer says about GTA 6 weather
Game Informer framed the system around Florida's real climate. Our cover story breakdown already lists its weather points, so here is the short version as it bears on storms. The sky changes, with dynamic cloudscapes moving across the map. Rain is local: you can stand in sunshine and watch a storm somewhere else. When a shower passes, the puddles and wet roads stay behind, and a rainbow can follow. Above all of that sit tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, which the magazine says Leonida shares with the real state.
Note the wording on hurricanes. Game Informer ties hurricanes to Florida's climate and says Leonida shares it. The magazine does not describe a single hurricane scene, a warning system, or a storm season calendar. No source says when in the in-game year one might arrive.
What did Rockstar's Owen Shepherd say about GTA 6 weather?
Owen Shepherd is Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering. Speaking to Game Informer, as reported by Dexerto on September 29, he said: "We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent."
Game Informer's examples fit that line. Rain falls over one area while another stays dry, and the wet ground stays wet after the storm moves on.
Dexerto also quotes Shepherd describing wind that swirls hair and debris on rooftops and blows ripples over the water. GamingBolt, on September 30, also quoted him on rainbows and persistent puddles. They come from an interview rather than a Rockstar announcement. None of them describes what a hurricane does once it arrives.
What is not confirmed: flooding, tornadoes and storm damage
None of the following appears in Game Informer's article or in any Rockstar statement we could find on October 22, 2026:
- Flooding of streets, neighbourhoods or swamps.
- Tornadoes or waterspouts.
- Hurricane damage to buildings, trees or roads.
- Missions or story beats built around a storm.
- Evacuations, closed shops or changed police behaviour during bad weather.
Some outlets have speculated about these. GamingBolt, for one, wondered aloud whether storms might make police easier to lose. Dexerto noted that old Rockstar job listings mentioned large-scale destruction, and also said those listings do not show hurricanes knocking down buildings.
If you see a confident list of GTA 6 weather types with tornadoes or flood levels on it, ask where it came from. Leaked footage is not a source here, and we do not repeat what it appears to show.
Where in Leonida could storms hit?
Game Informer's article does not say whether hurricanes favour the coast, the islands or inland areas. It does not name a single location. What Rockstar has named for the map is collected in our GTA 6 locations guide. Any claim that one district floods first, or that a particular island takes the worst of a storm, is guesswork until Rockstar shows it.
The release date is November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until then, the free Game Informer piece is the most detailed public account of the weather we found. The magazine says its full developer detail sits in the subscriber cover story.
Is there a weather cheat in GTA 6?
No. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code of any kind. That includes any way to summon a storm, call a hurricane or clear the sky. Our GTA 6 cheat menu page tracks what is and is not known about how cheats might be entered, and the GTA 6 cheats hub lists every code status we track.
Older games offer some precedent. GTA V had a cheat that changed the weather. Our GTA 5 cheat list history explains how that game's cheat list was built. That GTA V code tells you nothing about GTA VI. Rockstar has not said GTA VI will have cheats at all, and nothing suggests GTA V codes carry over.
