Red Dead Redemption cheats: how they work

Red Dead Redemption cheats are typed phrases, not button combinations. You open the Options menu, pick Cheats, and type a sentence such as "He gives strength to the weak" to turn on an effect.

This page covers Rockstar's 2010 western and its Undead Nightmare expansion. It does not cover Red Dead Redemption 2, which used a different system built around newspapers; our explainer on how RDR2 cheats work handles that game. Nothing on this page has any connection to GTA VI, and we explain why near the end.

Which versions of Red Dead Redemption have cheats?

The game first shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. A port of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare reached PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, 2023, as GamingBolt reported when Rockstar announced it. Double Eleven built that port.

PC came later. Insider Gaming reported on October 8, 2024 that both games would arrive on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Rockstar Store on October 29, 2024.

The guides we checked describe the same typed-phrase system on console and on PC. We have not tested any version ourselves. Everything below comes from the published lists we checked, and we print a phrase only when two of them spell it the same way.

How to enter cheats in Red Dead Redemption on PS4, Xbox and PC

GGRecon gives the console method for Red Dead Redemption: pause, open Options, select Cheats, then press Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox to bring up the text box. Type the phrase and confirm.

On PC, Insider Gaming says to press Escape, go to Options, click Cheats, and press F to type a code.

None of the sources we fetched named a Switch button, so we will not guess one. GGRecon says the same codes work on Switch. Follow the button prompt shown on screen.

TheGamer adds one practical detail. In its words, the codes "aren't case-sensitive," but the punctuation has to match. Commas, full stops, question marks and the one exclamation mark below all count.

Red Dead Redemption cheat codes that two sources agree on

Each phrase below is a Red Dead Redemption code. Every one appears with identical spelling and punctuation in both the GGRecon list and the Insider Gaming list. Effects are as GGRecon describes them.

  • He gives strength to the weak - invincibility
  • Abundance is everywhere - infinite ammo
  • I don't understand imnfinity - infinite Dead Eye
  • I wish I worked for Uncle Sam - your bounty no longer applies
  • The root of all evil, we thank you! - adds $500
  • You got yourself a fine pair of eyes - unlocks every area of the map
  • Now who put that there? - spawns a stagecoach
  • The old ways is the best ways - adds a sepia filter
  • They sell souls cheap here - lowers your bounty

The misspelling in the Dead Eye phrase is part of the code. Both lists print "imnfinity" with the extra n, so type it exactly that way rather than correcting it.

Some phrases did not make this list. For the horse, horse stamina, honour and gang outfit codes, the two lists differ by a capital letter, a comma or a full stop, so we leave those off. We also left out the other outfit and gun-set codes to keep this list short.

Do Red Dead Redemption cheats work in Undead Nightmare?

Partly, according to TheGamer. Its guide says nine of the main-game phrases also work in Undead Nightmare with the same effects.

We stop there. The sources we fetched disagree on which extra codes belong to Undead Nightmare and which belong to the base game. TheGamer files one group of codes under the expansion, while Gameranx lists some of the same names for the original game. With that conflict unresolved, we print no Undead Nightmare-only codes.

Do cheats turn off trophies in Red Dead Redemption?

Yes. GGRecon says activating cheats disables trophies and achievements in Red Dead Redemption, and advises saving before you use them. Insider Gaming gives the same warning.

Gameranx says that once a cheat is active, auto-saves are off and trophies are locked, and that loading an earlier save without cheats restores both. TheGamer describes the block as lasting for the current session.

We cover the general question for the next game in do cheats disable trophies in GTA 6, so we will not repeat it here.

Can you use Red Dead Redemption cheats in GTA 6?

No. These are Red Dead Redemption phrases for a 2010 game and its re-releases. Nothing ties them to GTA VI.

Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI. VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code of any kind. GTA VI is set for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's November 6, 2025 announcement. Our GTA 6 cheats status page tracks what is and is not known, and we will update it only when Rockstar or the game itself confirms something.

If you see a site printing a GTA VI cheat phrase today, treat it as invented. Our guide to fake GTA 6 cheat codes shows how to spot them.

VI Cheats is an independent site. We are not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.

What is the invincibility cheat in Red Dead Redemption?

Type "He gives strength to the weak" in the Cheats menu under Options. GGRecon and Insider Gaming both list it with that exact wording.

How do you spell the infinite Dead Eye cheat in Red Dead Redemption?

Both lists we checked print the phrase as "I don't understand imnfinity", with an extra n. We found no source saying the correct spelling works, so enter it as printed.

Do Red Dead Redemption cheats stop you saving?

Gameranx says auto-saves are disabled while a cheat is active, and trophies and achievements are locked. Loading a save made without cheats restores them.

Are there Red Dead Redemption cheats on Switch?

Yes. GGRecon says the same typed codes work on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Open Options, then Cheats, and follow the on-screen prompt to bring up the text box.
