RDR2 cheats are typed phrases, not button combinations. You open the pause menu, go to Settings, open a dedicated cheats list, type a phrase in, and from then on it sits in that list as a switch you can flip. That is most of how RDR2 cheats work, with one catch attached: turn a cheat on and Red Dead Redemption 2 stops saving your progress and stops handing out trophies.

This matters on a Grand Theft Auto VI site for one reason. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the most recent original single-player open world Rockstar Games has built, which makes it the closest thing to a precedent anyone has. Precedent is not prediction. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in Grand Theft Auto VI, and everything below describes Red Dead Redemption 2 only.

How do RDR2 cheats work when you enter one?

You enter RDR2 cheats through a menu rather than a keypad or a controller sequence. PowerPyx documents it per platform for Red Dead Redemption 2: on PS4, Options to pause, then Settings, then Triangle to open the cheats list, then Triangle again to type a code; on Xbox One the same route with the Menu button and Y. PC Gamer's guide, last updated November 19, 2025, describes the same path and adds the part people get wrong: "the punctuation in each cheat phrase is important but capitalization is not."

The phrases read like lines from the script. In Red Dead Redemption 2, "A simple life, a beautiful death" hands over a basic weapon set, "Death is silence" gives the stealth loadout, and "You flourish before you die" refills health, stamina and Dead Eye. Type one once and it is stored as a toggle.

Why do some RDR2 cheats need a newspaper first?

In Red Dead Redemption 2 the codes are objects in the world before they are codes. PC Gamer: "certain cheat codes will not unlock unless you have bought the corresponding newspaper, even if you know the phrase." There are three papers, each sold in two towns: the New Hanover Gazette in Valentine and Annesburg, the Saint Denis Times in Rhodes and Saint Denis, and the Blackwater Ledger in Strawberry and Blackwater. The phrase is printed on the paper. Buy it, carry it, and the menu will take the words.

Knowing the phrase is not enough. That is the detail most cheat lists skip, because a list of phrases is easier to publish than the condition attached to each one.

It also says something about where Rockstar cheat codes come from. PC Gamer describes Red Dead Redemption 2's codes as cheat phrases "found in the world itself". GTA Wiki makes the same point about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where the famous codes were community-found rather than given out by Rockstar in any guide. What that means for any pre-release code list is set out in how VI Cheats labels and verifies cheat references.

Does turning on a cheat in RDR2 block saving and trophies?

Yes, and this is the part worth reading twice before you touch one. PC Gamer states that in Red Dead Redemption 2 "having cheats turned on will remove your ability to earn achievements or save your game progress." PowerPyx puts it harder, warning that "activating cheats will disable trophies and disallows you from saving game progress" and advising players to "only use these on a separate manual save for fun."

One distinction gets lost easily. Entering a phrase is not the same as switching it on. Player guides widely report that you can type the codes in, leave every toggle off, save normally, and keep the entered list on your file for later. Turning one on and then off again is a different matter: the same guides report that some Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats keep trophies disabled on that save file even after the toggle goes back off. Rockstar has no support article on Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats, saving and trophies. A search of support.rockstargames.com on September 16, 2026 turned up RDR2 trophy and achievement pages but nothing covering cheats. Treat all of this as player-documented, not publisher-documented, and make a manual save before you test it.

How does that compare with GTA V's rules?

Grand Theft Auto V's rules are not the same, which is the reason to read both. Rockstar Support's article "Information about saving and achievements while using GTA V cheat codes", last updated April 28, 2024, says of Grand Theft Auto V: "Saving is allowed when cheat codes are enabled but achievements are temporarily disabled." Grand Theft Auto V takes one thing away. Red Dead Redemption 2, per the coverage above, takes both.

Two Rockstar single-player games, five years apart, two different answers. There is no house rule underneath them to extrapolate from.

Does RDR2 tell you anything about GTA VI cheats?

No. The official game page at rockstargames.com/VI, checked September 16, 2026, displays "COMING NOVEMBER 19, 2026" and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. It has no cheats section. The Grand Theft Auto VI area of Rockstar Support on that date held four articles, all about platforms, editions and pre-orders. None mention cheats. There is no code, no entry method, no cheat menu and no statement in either direction.

So Red Dead Redemption 2 tells you what Rockstar did last time, in a different series, on a game that shipped in 2018. It does not tell you what any button, phrase or menu will do in Grand Theft Auto VI. Any site printing a working Grand Theft Auto VI code today is printing something it made up, and McAfee's gaming-scam roundup of August 12, 2026 lists cheats, mods and trainers as a standing category of bait, spread through Discord, video descriptions and file-sharing sites. Every sequence on our GTA V cheat reference carries a GTA V badge and an unverified-for-GTA-VI label, and the reasoning is in what is actually verified about GTA VI cheat codes.

Are RDR2's cheats smaller than older Rockstar cheat lists?

The money cheat is where the gap is widest. Red Dead Redemption 2's money phrase, "Greed is now a virtue", adds $500 each time it is used, per PC Gamer, which means repeated trips through the menu rather than one windfall. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is where the lump sum lives, and GTA Wiki lists HESOYAM in that game as armor, health and $250,000. Grand Theft Auto V shipped with no money cheat at all, which PC Gamer states flatly. More on that in what can be verified about a GTA VI money cheat.

Questions people ask about RDR2 cheats and GTA VI

Do RDR2 cheats disable trophies on PS5?

Coverage of Red Dead Redemption 2 says yes: switching a cheat on disables trophies and achievements on that save file, and community guides report that some cheats keep them disabled even after the toggle goes back off. PowerPyx and PC Gamer both state the basic block. Rockstar has no support article on the subject, so the sourcing is press and community guides rather than the publisher.

Can you save your game after using a cheat in RDR2?

Not while a cheat is switched on. Player guides report that you can enter phrases into the cheat list without activating any of them, save normally, and keep the list for later. Make a separate manual save before you experiment. Reloading a clean file is the only way back.

Are RDR2 cheat phrases case sensitive?

No. PC Gamer's guide says capitalization does not matter in Red Dead Redemption 2, but punctuation does, so the commas and stops inside a phrase have to be right. That is why a phrase copied out of a video description often fails.

Will GTA VI use typed cheat phrases like RDR2?

Unknown, and nobody can honestly tell you otherwise. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in Grand Theft Auto VI as of September 16, 2026. Grand Theft Auto V used controller sequences and an in-game phone, Red Dead Redemption 2 used typed phrases from newspapers, and neither is evidence about a game due on November 19, 2026.
