How to steal cars in GTA 6, according to Rockstar

Yes, you can still steal cars in GTA VI, but the one-button hotwire is gone. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told IGN that some parked cars need tools or story progress before you can take them, while pulling a driver out of an occupied car works from the start.

Every quote on this page is Nelson on record; the rest is IGN's reporting as summarised by the named outlets. Kotaku reported his comments on August 28, 2026, citing IGN and an interview with The Gaming Gorilla. IGN published its full interview on October 7, 2026, and VICE summarised it the same day. IGN's own site could not be read for this article, so each detail names the outlet that printed it. None of it is a leak, and none of it is a finished feature list: the game is not out until November 19, 2026.

Why did Rockstar remove the one-button hotwire?

Nelson's explanation to IGN, as quoted by Kotaku, was blunt. In past games you could "press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted". He said the studio "felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table in terms of progression and decision-making for players".

The replacement is a tiered system. Nelson told IGN: "We have put some layers of stratification into the vehicles." Some parked cars, he said, are "not accessible to you until you get a bit further along with the story" and you have picked up the right tools.

No code bypasses any of this today. If you came here for a spawn code, no GTA 6 car spawn cheat has been verified, and the tiered theft system described here is exactly what such a cheat would have to skip.

What tools do you need to steal a car in GTA 6?

Two tools have been named so far, both by Nelson.

  • Slim Jim. Nelson told IGN, per Kotaku, "This other car will just need a Slim Jim." Kotaku's own description of the gameplay footage says the Slim Jim pops the lock on older vehicles.
  • Key cloner. Speaking to The Gaming Gorilla, as Kotaku quotes him, Nelson said "not all vehicles can be hotwired. Some vehicles need a key cloner to start." He added: "You can smash the window and get in, but you can't start it without the key cloner."

He also said, in the same interview, "You don't need anything to hotwire." Read that next to the key cloner line: the basic hotwire survives for cars that allow it, and a cloner-locked car will not start however you get inside.

Rockstar has not said how either tool is acquired, what it costs, or when in the story it turns up, so any article that gives a price or a mission name for the key cloner is guessing.

How does the phone scanner work?

Before you touch a car, the in-game phone can tell you what you are dealing with. Nelson walked IGN through it, and Kotaku printed the quote: the app "tells me this car is locked, it's got an alarm, and has no tracker". It also tells him "how much it's worth if I go to take it to a Pay n' Spray or a specialty car fence" and "how much it would cost for me to register it for myself".

So one scan covers the lock, the alarm, the tracker and the money. Kotaku names the app Waink.

The register-for-myself line is the only thing Nelson has said on record about keeping a stolen car. Kotaku adds a separate claim, sourced to Famitsu, that unregistered cars vanish when you reboot. The Famitsu interview was not read for this article, so that claim is not repeated here as fact.

Do stolen cars have trackers that alert the police?

Some do, and some have a twist. VICE's October 7, 2026 summary of the full IGN interview says certain trackers notify the police if you drive too slowly, which leaves two options: speed up or abandon the car. Engadget's August 27, 2026 write-up of IGN's preview put the same point in general terms, saying cars with built-in GPS may require you to hold a certain speed to avoid detection.

Nelson told IGN, as GamingBolt quoted on August 28, 2026, that "the streets in this game are narrower and more realistic in terms of scale", which makes driving "slightly more challenging". A tracker that punishes slow driving on narrow, busy streets is why the scanner bothers to tell you whether one is fitted. What the police do once they are alerted is covered in what Rockstar has said about the GTA 6 wanted system.

Can you still carjack a driver in GTA 6?

Yes, and this is the one route that needs nothing. GamingBolt quoted Nelson telling IGN that "you can always carjack any driver you see". Kotaku's account adds the scene: even early in the game you can run up to an expensive car stopped at a light or a stop sign, pull the driver out and take it, with no key cloner or tool involved.

The catch is the same as above. Kotaku notes the car may still carry a tracker, and the police can use it to find you.

How much do fences pay for stolen cars?

Rockstar has published no figure, so this section is about rules, not prices. VICE's summary of the IGN interview gives two. Damage lowers the price a fence pays, so a clean car earns more. And vehicle fences can pass on information, including access codes for police impound lots.

The wider money loop, robberies included, is in how to make money in GTA 6 according to the IGN interview, so it is not repeated here. For car theft the loop he described is short: scan it, steal it, keep it undamaged, deliver it.

Is there a GTA 6 vehicles list?

Not from Rockstar. The studio has published no vehicle list, no tool list and no price list for GTA VI. Pages ranking "every confirmed GTA 6 car" are built from trailer frames and guesswork. VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI cheat code of any kind, and the GTA 6 cheats page tracks that status. Hold vehicles to the same standard: if a detail is not in a Rockstar statement or a named interview, treat it as a guess.

How to steal cars in GTA 6 without a key cloner?

Take one with a driver in it. Nelson told IGN that you can always carjack any driver you see, and told The Gaming Gorilla that cloner-locked cars will not start without the device. Older parked cars may only need a Slim Jim.

What is the Slim Jim in GTA 6?

A lock tool. Nelson told IGN one car in his demo "will just need a Slim Jim", and Kotaku's description of the footage says it pops the lock on older vehicles. Rockstar has not said how it is obtained.

Do stolen cars in GTA 6 have GPS trackers?

Some do. Nelson's phone scanner reports whether a car has a tracker, and VICE's summary of the full IGN interview says some trackers alert the police if you drive too slowly.

Is there a car spawn cheat for GTA 6?

No code has been verified. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, so no list offering a car spawn code is drawing on anything the studio has released.
