How does the GTA 6 wanted system work?

The GTA 6 wanted system starts with a witness. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told IGN that a crime is only reported to the police if someone sees it or an alarm goes off. GamesRadar printed that line on August 27, 2026, and GamingBolt carried the same point the next day: police do not simply appear the moment you break the law.

Once a report is made, the police start building a picture of you. Nelson told IGN the police know what the pair are driving and that they are a couple. Inven Global's summary of the full interview adds that officers remember what the player is wearing. Small icons on the HUD show which of those facts the police have. Stars still stack up as the response gets heavier, and the scale now runs to six.

Everything in this article comes from what the developer has said in interviews and from outlets that reported those interviews. Nobody outside Rockstar has played the finished game. It launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What do the police know about Jason and Lucia?

GamesRadar's report on the IGN interview lists four things the police can know: the pair's clothes, their faces, their car and the fact that they are travelling together. Each one gets its own icon below the stars.

Nelson walked through what that means in a chase. The police know the car, so you can get out of it. They know you are a couple, so you can split up. In his words, as GamesRadar quoted them, splitting up also helps lower how the police see you.

GamingBolt, crediting Eurogamer, said police in the extended look seem to put out suspect descriptions over the radio, covering clothes, the car and any companions. The Inven Global write-up of IGN's full interview, published October 7, 2026, added that buying a new outfit removes heat, and that switching cars or splitting Jason and Lucia up can also throw the police off.

Does GTA 6 have six wanted stars?

Yes. GamesRadar and GamingBolt both report a scale of six stars, based on the extended gameplay look shown in August 2026. GTA V topped out at five, so VI goes one higher.

Nelson gave one sense of scale. He told IGN that a single star is not too hard to get away from. He also said that at three stars in the city, escaping by car can be difficult unless you have a very fast vehicle or a sports bike, and that getting off the streets and into the alleys on foot is usually the better choice.

VICE's October 7 roundup of IGN's full interview adds a detail about the stars themselves. It reported that stars show as hollow outlines when officers do not know what you look like. VI Cheats could not open IGN's own page to check that wording, so treat it as VICE's account of the interview.

What happens if one of them gets busted?

VI has two lead characters, so an arrest does not always catch both. VICE reported, from the same IGN interview, that if one protagonist gets away while the other is caught, the arrested one gets the familiar Busted screen and respawns. Inven Global's summary also says arrest still brings up the Busted screen and a respawn.

Neither report spells out what happens to money, weapons or mission progress after an arrest. Rockstar has not explained that part.

Can you get away with a crime in GTA 6?

Sometimes. Nelson's message was that small crimes do not have to snowball. GamingBolt printed his line in short form: "commit a crime and run, get into trouble and move on" before the cops arrive, and things tend to be fine as long as you do not start escalating.

He tied this to the criminal profile, a separate system that tracks how you behave over time. GamingBolt reported that it reads context, so defending yourself does not count the same as needless violence. Lasting change comes from going beyond what a situation needs again and again, not from one bad moment.

What Rockstar has not confirmed

Several popular claims about the GTA 6 wanted system have no developer source behind them yet.

  • How stars count down and clear. Rockstar has not described the rules, and no interview gives a cooldown timer or a search radius.
  • Any timer on heat. No outlet quoting Rockstar gives a time for how long the police keep a description of you on file.
  • Claims that changing clothes or cars "shatters" your criminal profile. The interviews link outfits and cars to police heat, not to the profile, and no developer quote says one wipes the other.
  • Exact rules for what each star level sends after you.

GamesRadar noticed that four white stars turned red after Jason and Lucia broke contact in the extended look, and guessed that red means police are still searching but not chasing. That is GamesRadar's reading of footage, not a Rockstar explanation.

Is there a cheat to remove your wanted level in GTA 6?

No. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in VI, and VI Cheats has verified no VI code of any kind. That includes a wanted-level code. Our page on the GTA 6 wanted level cheat covers what is and is not known, and the full GTA 6 cheats tracker lists every claim we have checked. Codes from GTA V and earlier games are not GTA VI codes, and any site selling or promising one is guessing.

Do GTA 6 police show up for every crime?

No. Rob Nelson told IGN that a crime is only reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off.

How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?

Six. GamesRadar and GamingBolt both report a six-star scale, one more than the five in GTA V.

How do you lose the police in GTA 6?

Nelson suggested ditching the car the police know, splitting Jason and Lucia up and heading on foot into alleys. Inven Global's summary of the full IGN interview says a new outfit also removes heat. Rockstar has not explained how the stars themselves clear.

Is there a GTA 6 wanted level cheat?

No. No GTA VI cheat code has been published by Rockstar or verified by VI Cheats.
