How do GTA 2 cheats work?

GTA 2 cheats are typed in as your player name, not entered during play. The 1999 top-down game reads the name you give your character before a level starts, and certain names switch on a cheat.

That one detail makes the game unusual in the series. Later entries moved cheats into gameplay itself. This page prints a short list of codes for the PC and the original PlayStation, and each one appears with the same spelling and effect in two reference lists: Grand Theft Wiki and The GTA Place. We checked both on October 5, 2026.

None of this applies to the next game. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. Our GTA 6 cheats status page tracks what is known.

How to enter cheats in GTA 2 on PC

The PC version needs one extra step. Grand Theft Wiki describes it plainly: type GOURANGA as the player name, enter it, delete it, then type the cheat as the name. The GTA Place gives the same unlock word, GOURANGA, as the way to enable cheat mode.

So the order is:

  • Open the player name screen before you start.
  • Type GOURANGA and confirm it.
  • Delete it and type the cheat word as your name.
  • Confirm again, then start playing.

Grand Theft Wiki lists the PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast codes in separate columns, and many words differ between versions. A PC word typed on a PlayStation, or the reverse, is not listed as working on both. Match the code to your version.

GTA 2 PC cheat codes

Each PC code below appears in the PC column of Grand Theft Wiki and on The GTA Place's PC cheats page. They are GTA 2 codes only. San Andreas on PC worked differently: GTAbase says its cheats are typed at any time during normal play, with no name screen involved.

  • CUTIE1 - 99 lives.
  • SEGARULZ - a 10x score multiplier.
  • MUCHCASH - $500,000. Grand Theft Wiki lists this word for PC, PlayStation and Dreamcast alike.
  • RSJABBER - invincibility.
  • GODOFGTA - all weapons with maximum ammo.
  • HUNSRUS - invisibility.
  • TUMYFROG - unlocks all levels, including the bonus levels.

One more appears in both lists with the same effect: LOSEFEDS removes the police. Grand Theft Wiki shows it in the PC and PlayStation columns.

The GTA Place adds a note of its own: some of its listed codes only work in the European version of the game. It does not say which ones. If a word fails on your copy, that note is one possible reason.

GTA 2 PlayStation cheat codes

On the PlayStation there is no GOURANGA step. Both sources simply say to enter the cheat as the player name. These words come from the PlayStation column of Grand Theft Wiki and from The GTA Place's PS1 cheats page, and they apply to the PlayStation release of GTA 2. Unlike San Andreas, where GTAbase describes cheats entered mid-game, they all go in at the name screen.

  • HIGHFIVE - a 5x score multiplier.
  • BIGSCORE - 10 million points.
  • IAMPLAYA - unlimited money.
  • ITSALLUP - level select.
  • NAVARONE - all weapons.
  • IGNITION - turbo mode.
  • DESIRES - maximum wanted level.

Why did GTA 2 use the player name for cheats?

Neither source explains the design choice, and we will not guess at one. What the record shows is the method itself. A name screen was already part of starting a game, and the cheat words lived there.

Do these codes work in GTA 6?

Nothing ties these codes to GTA VI. Rockstar has not announced any cheat system for it, and nothing official suggests a 1999 name trick carries forward. GTA VI is due on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's November 6, 2025 announcement.

How cheats behaved in older games tells you about those games only. In GTA V, for example, cheats last only for the session, and Rockstar Support says saving is allowed with cheats on while achievements are temporarily disabled - GTA V behaviour that predicts nothing about the next game.

What we left out

We printed only codes that matched character by character in both lists. Several words appear in one list but not the other, or carry a different effect in each, and those are not here. We also skipped GameShark codes entirely; they are cheat devices, not built-in cheats. Some listed GTA 2 words are crude, and we leave those unprinted.

Do GTA 2 cheats work on the PlayStation?

Yes. The original PlayStation release takes its own set of words, typed as the player name, with no GOURANGA step first.

What is the GOURANGA cheat in GTA 2?

On PC, GOURANGA is the word you enter as your name first to enable cheat mode. You then delete it and type the cheat word.

Why is my GTA 2 cheat not working?

Check that the word matches your version, since PC and PlayStation codes often differ. The GTA Place also notes that some codes only work in the European version.

Can you use GTA 2 cheats in GTA 6?

No source supports that. Rockstar has said nothing about GTA VI cheats, and VI Cheats has verified no code for it.
