Do You Need PS Plus for GTA 6?
Updated October 5, 2026: the PlayStation store page now shows "Offline play enabled." The section on internet connections below says what each store page shows today.
No. Nothing Sony, Microsoft or Rockstar has published says you need PS Plus, or an Xbox Game Pass tier, to play Grand Theft Auto VI. Both official store listings describe the game as "a single-player experience," and Sony and Microsoft tie their paid subscriptions to online multiplayer.
That is the short answer as of September 29, 2026. The rest of this page shows where each piece comes from, what the store pages list, and what could change if Rockstar ever announces an online mode. VI Cheats is an independent site. It is not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, Sony or Microsoft.
What the GTA 6 store listings say about online play
We checked both console store pages on September 29, 2026.
The PlayStation product page lists the game for PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. It states: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." The player field reads "1 player." The online line on that page is the standard Sony notice that online features require an account for PlayStation and are subject to its terms. We found no mention of PS Plus on that page.
The Xbox Store listing for Xbox Series X|S carries the same sentence about a single-player experience. Its fine print says that certain features may require an internet connection and Rockstar Games account registration. It does not name Game Pass as a requirement.
So the two listings agree. The game is sold as single-player, and neither lists a platform subscription.
When do you need PS Plus for GTA 6 or any PS5 game?
Sony's own PlayStation Plus support page puts it plainly: "In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription." The same page adds that some games do not require one, and tells players to check PlayStation Store for each title.
The rule Sony states is about online multiplayer. A game listed as single-player, with one player, falls outside it. Sony does not say anything on that page about offline campaigns needing a membership, and we are not adding a rule it does not state.
Rockstar has announced no online mode for GTA VI. Our page on what is known about GTA 6 online tracks that question. If an online mode is announced later, Sony's multiplayer rule would be the one to check against it at that point.
Do you need Game Pass on Xbox to play GTA 6?
Not according to anything Microsoft lists. The Xbox Game Pass page shows "Online console multiplayer" as a benefit of its Essential, Premium and Ultimate tiers. That is the Xbox equivalent of the PS Plus rule: a paid tier covers online console multiplayer.
Microsoft's free-to-play page adds an exception in its own words: "All XBOX players are able to access online multiplayer for free-to-play games on their console at no charge." GTA VI is a paid game at 79.99 USD for the Standard Edition and 99.99 USD for the Ultimate Edition, so that exception is not relevant here.
Whether GTA VI will appear in a Game Pass or PS Plus catalog is a separate question. Neither Sony, Microsoft nor Rockstar has announced that. This page is only about what you need to play a copy you bought.
GTA+ is not PS Plus
GTA+ is Rockstar's own membership. It is a different product from PlayStation Plus and from Game Pass, and it is easy to mix them up because it is bundled with pre-orders.
Both console store pages list one month of GTA+ as a pre-order bonus for the Standard and Ultimate Editions, along with the Vintage Vice City Pack. The PlayStation page says the GTA+ month auto-renews and that the offer must be claimed by March 31, 2027. The Xbox page says it must be redeemed within 180 days of the pre-order. If you do not want a paid second month, note the renewal date; the PlayStation page says to cancel in Subscriptions Management before the next payment date.
What is GTA+ for today? The PlayStation Store product page for GTA+ calls it "the premium monthly Membership for GTA Online players" on PS5, at 7.99 USD a month. That same page says access to GTA Online for PS5 is required to receive the GTA Online benefits. It also carries the line that online console play may require a separate paid platform subscription. In other words, GTA+ is not a substitute for a platform subscription; the listing itself says online console play may still need one.
For more on what each edition includes and when pre-loading opens, see GTA 6 pre-order and pre-load dates.
Will GTA 6 need an internet connection?
Some features will, going by the listings. The Xbox page says certain features, content or services may require an internet connection and a Rockstar Games account. The PlayStation page says online features need an account for PlayStation.
Neither page says the whole game requires a constant connection. The two pages do differ on offline play. The PlayStation US product page shows "Offline play enabled" next to "1 player" and "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." We saw those lines on October 2 and October 5, 2026. The Xbox listing, checked on October 5, 2026, shows "Single player" and "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S." It does not use the word offline.
Every copy still needs a connection once, to download the game. Kotaku reported on June 24, 2026 that Take-Two's press release describes the physical version as "containing a download code inside the box." Pre-loading, which the PlayStation page lists as a 7-day pre-load for pre-orders, happens over a connection too.
What this means for cheats
Cheats are a single-player topic on this site, and a subscription does not change that. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. The history is on our GTA 6 cheats page.
For reference only, in GTA V cheats were session-based. Reloading a save or restarting cleared them, and Rockstar Support said saving was allowed with cheats on while achievements were temporarily disabled. That is how GTA V behaved. It is not a prediction for GTA VI.
Do you need PS Plus for GTA 6 story mode?
No platform or publisher page says so. Both console listings call GTA VI a single-player experience, and Sony ties PS Plus to online multiplayer.
Does GTA 6 have an online mode that needs PS Plus?
Rockstar has announced no GTA VI online mode as of September 29, 2026. If one is announced, check Sony's and Microsoft's multiplayer rules against it then.
Does the free GTA+ month include PS Plus?
No. GTA+ is Rockstar's membership for GTA Online. The PlayStation Store listing for it notes that online console play may require a separate paid platform subscription.
Do you need Game Pass Essential to play GTA 6 on Xbox?
Nothing Microsoft or Rockstar lists says so. Microsoft ties its paid tiers to online console multiplayer, and the Xbox Store calls GTA VI single-player.
