GTA 6 anti cheat: has Rockstar announced anything?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. As of September 28, 2026, we found no announcement from Rockstar Games about GTA 6 anti cheat plans, whether that means BattlEye, a kernel-level driver, or anything else. We searched Rockstar's Newswire and established outlets on that date and found nothing naming a system for Grand Theft Auto VI.
What does exist is a record. Rockstar added anti-cheat software to GTA Online on PC in 2024, and that move had consequences people still talk about. This page covers that record, separates it from the question of cheat codes, and marks clearly where history ends and GTA VI begins.
VI Cheats is an independent site. We are not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.
What Rockstar has confirmed about GTA VI
Very little that touches this topic. Rockstar's Newswire post of November 6, 2025 set the launch for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. We re-checked on September 28, 2026 and found no later delay. Rockstar has never announced a PC version.
Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI either. That covers both kinds: single-player codes and online cheating. VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code of any sort. Our cheat code status page tracks that and will change only when Rockstar publishes something.
What anti-cheat did Rockstar add to GTA Online?
BattlEye. PCGamesN and GamingOnLinux both reported on September 17, 2024 that Rockstar had added it to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online. PCGamesN noted players seeing it appear at startup, and described the move as aimed at the hacker problem that had followed the PC version since its 2015 launch. BattlEye is a third-party product. It was already used in other online games, including Rainbow Six Siege and Destiny 2, according to the same report.
80 Level, reporting a day later and citing Rockstar, said BattlEye is meant to detect and block cheating software that accesses GTA Online servers, attempts to tamper with protected game code, and sabotage of other players' games. The same outlet reported that it runs with kernel-level access on Windows and that it can lead to hardware bans on the PC used.
That kernel detail describes GTA Online on PC, not GTA VI.
Why GTA Online stopped working on Steam Deck
This was the most visible side effect. GamingOnLinux quoted Rockstar's own FAQ at the time: "Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online." The same FAQ line said players could still use GTA V Story Mode but not GTA Online.
GamingOnLinux noted that the game was rated Steam Deck Playable at the time. It also pointed out that BattlEye itself supports Linux, and said it hoped the exclusion was an oversight. Rockstar's FAQ, as quoted there, also stated that GTA V and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck.
So the split looked like this on PC. Story Mode kept running on Steam Deck and Linux. The online side did not. We have not tested either on our own hardware, and we are reporting what those outlets published.
Does a console-only launch change the GTA 6 anti cheat question?
This section is general context, not a prediction.
BattlEye in GTA Online is a PC program. It runs on Windows, where players can install and run their own software next to the game. That is the setting the 2024 coverage was about, and it is where the Steam Deck and Linux problem came from.
GTA VI, as announced, launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Consoles are closed systems run by Sony and Microsoft, and the PC-style model of a separately installed anti-cheat program is not how console games are usually protected. That is a general observation about platforms. It is not a claim about what Rockstar will build, and it says nothing about a future PC release, which Rockstar has not announced.
Are cheat codes the same thing anti-cheat blocks?
No. These are two separate things, and mixing them causes a lot of confused searches.
Single-player cheat codes were a designed feature in past Grand Theft Auto games. In GTA V, Rockstar let players enter codes by button input or by dialing numbers on the in-game phone. Those codes were session-based, so reloading a save or restarting cleared them. Rockstar Support's page on GTA V cheats says: "Saving is allowed when cheat codes are enabled but achievements are temporarily disabled." All of that is GTA V behaviour, not a guide to GTA VI.
Anti-cheat targets something else: third-party software used to get an edge or cause harm in shared online sessions. The BattlEye rollout was aimed at GTA Online on PC, and GamingOnLinux reported that Story Mode stayed playable on Steam Deck even while online play was blocked.
We will not describe cheat tools, mod menus, or trainers, and we will not explain how any anti-cheat system could be avoided. If you want the history of what Rockstar has actually listed for PC players, read what Rockstar lists for GTA 6 cheats on PC.
Is there any news on GTA 6 online cheating?
Not from Rockstar. We found no Rockstar announcement of an online mode launch date for GTA VI, and no published rules on online cheating for the new game. We keep a separate page on GTA 6 online cheats and what is known, which we update when Rockstar posts something.
Some sites present a specific GTA VI anti-cheat system as settled. We found none that cited Rockstar. Treat those claims as speculation until Rockstar publishes a statement or a support page.
Frequently asked questions
Has Rockstar confirmed anti-cheat for GTA 6?
No. As of September 28, 2026 we found no announcement from Rockstar naming any anti-cheat system for GTA VI.
Does GTA 6 use BattlEye?
There is no announcement saying so. BattlEye was added to GTA V and GTA Online on PC in September 2024.
Is GTA 6 anti-cheat kernel-level?
Nobody can say. 80 Level reported that BattlEye in GTA Online runs with kernel-level access on Windows PCs. GTA VI is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
Will anti-cheat stop single-player cheat codes in GTA 6?
We cannot answer for GTA VI, because Rockstar has not said whether it will have cheat codes at all. In GTA V, codes were a Story Mode feature, and the 2024 anti-cheat change targeted GTA Online.
