Is there GTA 6 age verification?
Rockstar has announced no age check of its own for GTA VI. The only GTA 6 age verification in place today is in Australia, where PlayStation and Xbox require adult accounts to verify their age before buying or adding R18+ games, and the Australian PlayStation listing rates GTA VI R18+.
Everywhere else, no platform or Rockstar age check for GTA VI has been announced as of October 8, 2026. The game is due on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, according to the Rockstar Newswire post of November 6, 2025.
The sections below cover what the Australian check asks for, who runs it, and which stories about the game's rating are wrong.
What is GTA 6 rated in Australia?
R 18+. The Australian PlayStation Store page for Grand Theft Auto VI, read on October 8, 2026, shows the rating line "ACB R 18+" with the descriptors Drug Use, High Impact Violence and Sex Scenes. R 18+ is Australia's restricted category for games. The only step beyond it is Refused Classification, which means the game cannot be sold.
Two other Australian labels have been attached to the game, and neither matches the current store rating.
- Claims that GTA VI is rated X 18+ in Australia are wrong. Australia has no X 18+ classification for games. The Australian Classification website describes X 18+ as a film category for sexually explicit material, and games are not rated in it.
- An MA 15+ listing for Grand Theft Auto VI turned up on the Australian Classification website in 2023. GamingBolt reported in October 2023 that the entry had been up since April 2 of that year and that nobody knew if it was legitimate or a placeholder. The current store rating is R 18+.
The ESRB and PEGI side of the story is covered in our GTA 6 age rating report, so it is not repeated here.
How does PlayStation age verification work in Australia?
PlayStation's Australian support FAQ puts it in one line: "Age verification is now required for Australian adult accounts to add Restricted (R 18+) rated games and content from PlayStation Store to your library."
The check is run by Yoti, which the FAQ names as PlayStation's age-verification provider. It offers two routes. One is a facial scan, in which Yoti estimates age from the geometry of the face. The other is an ID check using an accepted document such as a passport.
You do it once. The FAQ says verification only needs to be completed once per account.
An account that skips it is not locked out of the console. In the FAQ's words, unverified users "can continue playing on PlayStation", but they cannot add R 18+ games or content from PlayStation Store until they verify. Players under 18 are told to use an account managed by a parent or guardian.
GTA VI carries R 18+ on the Australian PlayStation Store. An Australian adult account therefore has to pass the check before it can add the game from the store.
Does Xbox require age verification for GTA 6 in Australia?
Xbox runs the same kind of check, tied to the rating rather than to any one game. Microsoft said on August 10, 2026, that it was introducing age assurance for apps and games rated 18+ on the Microsoft Store and Xbox storefronts in Australia, to comply with the country's age-restricted material online safety codes.
Microsoft listed email-based verification, facial age estimation, an official document scan and a credit card as options, run with its partners Yoti and Verifymy. Press Start reported in August 2026 that apps and games players already own are not affected, that the check applies to buying and accessing R18+ games, and that the requirement would begin in late August.
The Microsoft rule covers all 18+ rated titles in those stores. VI Cheats did not confirm the rating shown on the Australian Xbox listing for the game, so the R 18+ figure in this article comes from the PlayStation page only.
Why does Australia require age checks for R18+ games?
The checks come from Australia's online safety codes for age-restricted material. Law firm Baker McKenzie explains that industry associations developed the codes at the request of the eSafety Commissioner, the national online safety regulator, and that they impose binding obligations on online service providers. They cover material judged unsuitable for Australian users under 18.
The eSafety Commissioner registered the codes on September 9, 2025. According to Baker McKenzie, the codes for app distribution services, equipment providers and social media took effect on March 9, 2026. The console store checks above are the platforms' response. The rule is not specific to GTA VI. It covers every R 18+ game sold through those stores in Australia.
Is there GTA 6 age verification in the UK, US, EU or Canada?
No purchase-level check has been announced for GTA VI in the UK, the US, the EU or Canada, by Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft, as of October 8, 2026. Age ratings still apply in those regions.
UK Xbox players will see one related check. Xbox Wire said in July 2025 that UK adult accounts would need to verify their age from early 2026 to keep full access to social features such as voice chat, text chat and game invites. The same post says verification does not affect the ability to play and purchase games, so it does not gate GTA VI.
Rockstar has not described any age gate inside the game either. The US PlayStation listing, read on October 8, 2026, says "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." What that means for online play is set out in our report on GTA VI as a single-player game.
Age checks and cheats are separate topics. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. Our GTA 6 cheats tracker records what is known, and the pre-order and pre-load dates page covers when the game can be bought and installed.
VI Cheats does not give advice on getting around age checks.
Do you have to scan your face to buy GTA 6?
Only in Australia, and not necessarily your face. PlayStation offers a facial scan or an ID check through Yoti. Microsoft also lists email-based verification, a document scan and a credit card. No purchase check has been announced in other countries.
Do you need to verify your age again for every R18+ game on PS5?
No. PlayStation's Australian FAQ says age verification only needs to be completed once per account.
Can an unverified PlayStation account in Australia still play games?
Yes. The FAQ says unverified accounts can continue playing on PlayStation. They cannot add R 18+ games or content from PlayStation Store until they verify.
Is GTA 6 rated X 18+ in Australia?
No. Australia has no X 18+ classification for games. The Australian PlayStation Store lists GTA VI as R 18+.
Does Rockstar require age verification for GTA 6?
Rockstar has announced no age check of its own for GTA VI as of October 8, 2026. The only checks in place are the Australian store checks run by PlayStation and Xbox.
