GTA 6 story length: what is actually known

Rockstar has not published a length for the Grand Theft Auto VI campaign. The only figure on record is one developer's own playthrough: Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said his run took about 80 hours, and that run covered the main story plus some optional goals.

That number is useful but narrower than it first looks, so the GTA 6 story length question has only a partial answer today. The rest of this page separates what was said from what has been read into it.

What did Rob Nelson say about GTA 6 playtime?

Nelson spoke to The New York Times in a piece published on August 27, 2026. We did not read the Times article itself. We read the reports on it from VICE (Brent Koepp, August 27, 2026) and GamingBolt (Ravi Sinha, August 28, 2026), and a GamesRadar+ report syndicated on Yahoo.

Per those reports, Nelson finished a playthrough in February 2026 and it took roughly 80 hours. Citing the Times, VICE reports that Nelson completed the campaign alongside "some optional goals with narrative ramifications." GamingBolt describes the same content as optional goals that may affect the finale without directly deciding the ending.

One line in GamingBolt's report says a typical playthrough "can last about 80 hours." The rest of that report is more careful. It makes clear the figure was Nelson's own run, not a studio-wide average.

Is 80 hours the main story length for GTA 6?

No. That reading is wrong.

The 80 hours includes optional objectives. None of the reports we read say how much of that time was the main story and how much was side content. As of September 28, 2026, we found no main-story-only figure from Rockstar or from the interview.

A few other limits apply:

  • It is a single playthrough by a single person.
  • That person is a senior developer who knows the game far better than any player will on day one.
  • The run took place in February 2026, about nine months before launch. Games can change between then and release.
  • Someone who helped build the game may play very differently from someone seeing the map for the first time.

Any of these could push a first-time player's time higher or lower. We cannot say which way, and neither can anyone else yet. VICE makes the same point: players focused only on the campaign may finish faster, and players who chase everything could take far longer.

Where do other GTA 6 playtime numbers come from?

You may have seen other totals passed around on social media and in video titles. We could not trace them to Rockstar, to a named developer, or to an established outlet. We are not repeating them here.

If a number has no speaker and no date attached, treat it as a guess. The Nelson figure is different because it has both: a named person, a named publication, and a month for when the playthrough happened.

When can players time the GTA 6 story themselves?

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar confirmed that date on its Newswire on November 6, 2025. Rockstar has not announced a PC version. For the full timeline, see our GTA 6 release date page.

Once the game is out, completion-time data from real players will start to build. Until then, the Nelson playthrough is the one sourced data point. We will not publish an estimate of our own, because we have not played the game.

If you are planning around launch, our page on GTA 6 pre-order and preload dates covers the dates Rockstar has listed.

Why a sourced playtime claim differs from GTA 6 cheat claims

The 80-hour figure is a useful contrast with most of what circulates about GTA VI cheats.

A playtime number from a developer interview can be checked. The speaker is on the record, and the outlet and date are known. It still needs careful reading, as above, but it traces back to a real person on the record.

Claimed GTA VI cheat codes do not work that way. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in Grand Theft Auto VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. Lists that claim otherwise have no speaker and no source. Our GTA 6 cheats page tracks what is and is not confirmed.

VI Cheats is an independent site. It is not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive or The New York Times.
