Is GTA 6 eligible for The Game Awards 2026?

Yes. GTA VI is eligible for The Game Awards 2026, because the show's published cutoff falls one day after the game's November 19 launch. That is the whole GTA 6 Game Awards story so far: the game qualifies on paper, and nothing has been announced beyond that.

Kotaku and Insider Gaming both reported the eligibility on October 15, 2026. Neither cited a statement from Rockstar Games. Both pointed to the same document, the FAQ on The Game Awards' own website, which we read on October 17.

What is The Game Awards 2026 eligibility cutoff?

The FAQ sets the main cutoff in one sentence: games "must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT."

GTA VI launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026. The PlayStation US product page, read on October 17, still says the game "is released for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026." So the game clears the line by roughly a day.

One detail matters for anyone reading the rule closely. The cutoff is written in Pacific Time, while the game unlocks at different local times around the world. Our page on regional GTA 6 unlock times covers how that works. For eligibility, the only question is whether the game is commercially available by Friday evening in California, and a November 19 release answers it.

When is The Game Awards 2026 show?

The show lands about three weeks after GTA VI goes on sale. The FAQ gives these details:

  • The show airs live on Thursday, December 10, 2026.
  • It comes from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
  • It streams free across major streaming services, according to the FAQ.
  • The Players' Voice category has a later cutoff: games must ship on or before November 30, 2026.

How are Game Awards winners chosen?

The FAQ says winners come from a blended vote. The voting jury counts for ninety percent. Public fan voting counts for the remaining ten percent. The FAQ describes the jury as an international panel drawn from more than a hundred media and influencer outlets. The same jury picks the nominees in most categories, according to the FAQ.

That split is the reason eligibility and a real shot at a nomination are two different things. Fans can push a game in Players' Voice and add weight to the fan share of other categories. The jury decides most of the result, and, as Kotaku points out, jurors need to play a game before they can judge it.

Does eligible mean GTA 6 will be nominated?

No. Eligible means the game is allowed to be considered. It says nothing about whether the jury will put it on a shortlist.

The calendar is tight. The Game Awards' FAQ does not publish a 2026 date for the nominee announcement. Kotaku notes that the 2025 nominations were already out by November 17, 2025, which is earlier than this year's cutoff. If the 2026 schedule runs anywhere near that, jurors could have only a few days with a very large open-world game before they vote. Kotaku makes the same point: critics who vote need time with a game, and Rockstar has described GTA VI as a long game with a massive map.

Any claim about which categories GTA VI will appear in is a guess until The Game Awards publishes a shortlist. We do not know when jurors will get the game, and we do not know the nominee date.

Has Rockstar said anything about The Game Awards?

Not that we can find. The two GTA 6 Game Awards reports we read, from Kotaku and Insider Gaming, both rest on the published rules, not on anything from Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive.

If music or score categories come up later, the composer credit is already public. Rockstar's launch trailer, released on October 15, 2026, names Justice as the original score composers, which we cover in our report on the GTA 6 score by Justice.

What this means for GTA 6 cheats

Awards and cheat codes have no connection. Rockstar has published nothing about cheats in GTA VI, and VI Cheats has verified no GTA VI code. Our GTA 6 cheats page tracks that status and will change only when Rockstar publishes something we can check.

VI Cheats is an independent site. We are not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, Sony, Microsoft or The Game Awards.
